Can you keep a secret?

I stole two pieces of Lindt chocolates off my brother without his permission when I told him that I won't.

I think I would need to replace them before he notices their disappearance. Logically, I should run down and get it now because he is out of the house. But it's Saturday night when the city comes alive, I'm wearing my pyjamas, my hair looks like a bird nest and I have no make up on.

Hm...

Devil wears prada

Ive just watched the show 'devil wears prada'. That show is evil. It makes me want to burn every single item in my closet and use money I don't have to buy items I don't need.

Lust is a sin.

Tasmania-December 2005

After much nagging from Cheryl, I finally got myself an external hard drive. I started transferring my files into the external hard drive two days ago when I came across these old Tasmania Trip photos that were burnt into a cd. I haven't had a chance to explore them properly aside from the brief preview on Beatrice's multiply website.

Tasmania is arguably the most beautiful state in Australia. I normally prefer travelling outside of Australia rather than within Australia because why travel interstate when one brown barren spot look the same to another. Australia as a country is pretty brown and dry in general. Scenic wise, its nothing to shout about. Tasmania was an exception. We travelled around Tasmania within 5 days and we did it 'amazing race' style. There was just so much to explore~!

I opened my journal and found some information on Tasmania that i scribbled down during the trip. Hopefully this will serve as a guide to those who plan to travel there in the future.

Day 1 (5/11)

Landed in Launceston
Immediately we rented a car and drove out of Launceston using the North East trail.

We stopped by Bridestowe Lavender Farm, the largest commercial Lavender Farm in the southern hemisphere.

Photobucket

Ever had lavender ice cream? It was my first at the farm. Let's just say, its an acquired taste

Photobucket
I'll never forget this picture. We were driving along the road when suddenly we spotted this huge pink bush. From far, it looked like a huge pink igloo. The brakes took the brunt of our excitement, we hopped out in glee and started snapping pictures.

Photobucket
Little Blue Lake. Yeah, that wasn't the description of the lake. Its the actual name - "little blue lake". This picture wasn't photoshopped. The water was so blue that it felt magical. The intensity of the colour is caused by the high aluminium content in the water. So swimming and drinking of the water is definitely not permitted.

Photobucket
We headed to Bays of Fire (Binalong Bay)

Photobucket
The sand was extremely soft and white

Drove to Coles Bay (stayed there)

Photobucket
Scenery at Coles Bay

Photobucket
Hm..some beach

Day 2 (6/11)

Photobucket
I spent most of the trip doing this. The roads are really windy in Tasmania. Because i didn't want to puke my guts out during the trip, I volunteered to drive most of the trip.

Photobucket
We joined an oyster farm tour. It was really insightful. I didn't know oyster farming was such a long process. This farm was located at the mouth of a river because it was the right salt content - not too salty yet not pure fresh water.

Photobucket
I ate seaweed from the sea along with many yummy freshly shucked oysters.

Photobucket
Hello...That's a paddy melon wallaby. I fed many of them when I was there.

Photobucket
Freycinet National Park - Wine Glass Bay. The beach was one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever come across. Believe me when I say its beautiful. I've been to many beaches around the world and nothing comes close to this. The fact that its not polluted by human traffic and rubbish also adds to beauty. The bay is called 'Wine Glass' bay because it is shaped like a wine glass (rhetorical statement)

The granite made the cliffs look strikingly red

Photobucket
Vinh and Rachel

Note: SHould visit Murray Island if you have the opportunity

Photobucket
Port Arthur prison. When Australia was first colonised, convicts were imprisoned here.

There are two prison tours. The day one and the night one which is called the 'ghost tour'. Beatrice decided that we should go for the night tour. I was a little skeptical about the tour and asked her, "why is it called the ghost tour?" She replied, "O, because the tour is conducted at night." I happily obliged and tagged along. Horrors of horrors, I discovered that the tour was on ghost stories that apparently occured in the prison.

Photobucket
That was my expression throughout the night

Photobucket
At the start of the tour, the tour guide asked people to volunteer to be the lamp bearer. I quickly raised my hand at the opportunity. I welcomed any sort of light during the tour.

Definitely, a wrong move. The lamp bearer was required to do all sorts of silly acts. One time I was required to walk up to one of the warden's houses by myself, knock on the door, ask "is anyone home?" and hope that no one replies me. My heart was up to my throat the entire trip.

NOTE: Join the day tour instead. It's much more informative and they wont scare the lights of out you

Drove to Hobart that night. We stayed at this backpackers place called Pickled Frog. It was the worst backpackers place I ever stayed in. Gross! The bathroom was constantly flooded. Imagine showering in someone else's scum.

O, another note of caution, make sure you stock up on food for dinner and supper because shops and supermarkets in Tasmania close by 5 pm.

Day 3 (7/11)

The next day, we headed to the Cadbury Chocolate Factory for a tour of the factory. Chocolate haven =)

Remember this from the Cadbury ads?
Photobucket

Photobucket
Hobart city.

Photobucket
Lake St Clair. You may see platypuses swimming there but its hard to catch them. I swear I saw a platypus but the others still deny it.

Photobucket
Beatrice and her mum. Her mum is cool. She followed us hiking, climbed up hills, and slept in backpackers! All without complaining as well! Salute.

Note: Check out Gordon River cruise

Photobucket
We stopped by Glen Clyde Tea house for lunch. I fell in love with this place the moment I stepped in.

Photobucket
Absolutely cozy inside

Photobucket
You can dine alfresco style at the back of the cottage.

Photobucket
I ordered garlic buttered prawns on rice

Photobucket
There was a quaint garden at the back as well

Photobucket
Beatrice

Photobucket
More pictures of the garden

Photobucket

Photobucket
The owner's cat.

We spent the night in Queenstown. We stayed in this cabin called Copper Country Cabin. This place is highly recommended. After splitting the cost between the five of us, it was the cheapest accommodation during the trip.

Photobucket
Living room. Don't mind our mess.

Photobucket
One of the rooms. Well, the place isn't 5-star quality but you can't expect too much in Australia. Everything is pretty pricey.

Note: Copper Country Cabin Highly recommended

Note II: There's an underground coal mine in Queenstown. We didn't join the tour but I reckon that it will be pretty interesting.

Day 4 (8/11)

Photobucket
Went to Cradle mountain to do the short walks there. We splitted up into two groups upon arrival. Beatrice and I in one group and the others, in the other group. Doing it Asian style, Beatrice and I decided to complete every single short walk there. We walked 18 km in total. Along the way, we got chased by a bee, had an encounter with a snake and met lots of other more friendly creatures.

Photobucket
Hm...some lizard

Photobucket

Photobucket
It was a really hot day. We finished our water in no time.

Photobucket

Photobucket
Hello...a cute echidna. I only remembered its name at the end of the trip.
[post-edit: oops, its not an echidna as Tim kindly pointed out. Dear animal, what is your name?!?]

We joined the 'spotlight' tour. We sat in the mini bus whilst the driver shone the torchlight on various nocturnal animals. I think the tour was worth the price.

Note: You can also join "devils @ cradle" (tasmanian devils) tour but frankly, I think it's a tad overpriced.

Day 5 (9/11)

Photobucket
Headed to Moles Creek for an underground tour of the glow worm cave

Photobucket
Hm...some spider

Note: Cathedral tour (11 am) recommended & can do King Solomon's cave tour but there's no glow worms there

Note II: You can also visit Devil's Gullet reserve. It's located near Mole's creek and apparently, it has a lookout that provide pretty stunning views of Cradle Mountain.

We stopped by Deloraine for lunch

Headed back to Launceston

Photobucket
Cataract Gorge, Launceston. This tourist attraction is located only 15 minutes walk from the city centre. There's a huge outdoor swimming pool here along with walking trails, a suspension bridge and the world's longest single span chairlift. This is probably where the locals hang out during the weekends.

Note: You might want to try out hand gliding in Launceston. It's a pretty popular tourist attraction here.

Photobucket
I'll end this post with another wallaby feeding picture. Ain't they cute?

Photoship tips - Removing dark circles

Hate taking pictures after a huge night out with evidence on your face to show? Fear not, here's where photoshop comes in handy =)

Photobucket

Here's my original photo. This was taken by Cheryl at QX's birthday dinner. Think I was trying to be a fish or something. Who knows. I had slight dark circles under my eyes that night.
Photobucket

p/s: I drew in a yellow arrow and a red circle as well because initially, I plan to put up tips on smoothening the complexion but the results were not too obvious in the post-edit photo. So I'll leave it for another day.

Removing dark circles
To remove the dark circles, I used the stamp tool (The stamp tool is circled in green)

The Clone Stamp tool takes a sample of an image, which you can then apply over another image or part of the same image

Step 1: Select the stamp tool

Step 2: Choose a brush tip. I choose the soft round brush. You can increase your brush size by pressing the "[" key and reduce your brush size by pressing the "]" key.

Step 3: Reduce the opacity to about 10%. This will make the editing look more natural.

Step 3: Deselect "aligned" in the options bar to continue to use the sampled pixels from the initial sampling point each time you stop and resume painting.

Step 4: Set the sampling point by positioning the pointer in any open image and then Alt and left-click simultaneously (Windows). I normally set the sampling point slightly underneath the dark circles.

Step 4: Finally, start colouring over your dark circles by left-clicking on the areas you want to correct.

Photobucket
Edited image. Hm...the correction is not too obvious here but if you look closely, youll notice a slight difference =)

p/s: Cheryl, who is a fantastic photographer was generous enough to give me photoshop lessons =) If you guys need a freelance photographer in KL, let me know =)

Blogs

I read quite a few blogs. Some of personal friends and some non-personal ones. I read them because I'm intrigued by their lives. Other people's lives always fascinate me, particularly if their way of life and culture is very different from mine. In turn, I find myself drawing inspiration from some of these blogs.

PostSecret Mini-Movie

This is a mini-video on one of my favourite blogs - postsecret.blogspot.com. The guy behind it is a genius. I think of it as a huge worldwide community project. Being able to share your deepest darkest secret is liberating.

Living with chromosone Y

My parents have been down visiting us kids in Melbourne the past week. Hooray to sparkling bathrooms, lemon-scented kitchens, warm soups and hearty home-cooked meals. A double hooray because I hardly lifted a finger doing any household chores the past week. And of course, a triple hooray for their company.(obligatory statement – just in case, they read my blog =D)

Despite me enjoying my parents company, I find that the apartment is a little cramped for the four of us – its like we are breathing down each other’s necks at times. It doesn’t help that my brother’s laptop wireless is spoilt. So it does get frustrating with the four of us (okay three because my dad doesn’t use the Internet) sharing just one laptop. And its MY laptop. I have this thing about sharing my laptop. Firstly, I keep all these online and offline private journals in my laptop. It doesn’t help that I’m can be pretty careless at times. Plus, I don’t have my files backed up so I’m always afraid that my computer may crash one day. (and ill lose all my photos!) Also, the courtesy of door-knocking is not exactly practiced in my family. I’m getting used to the sudden barging into my room. Oh, and one day I woke up to realise that my phone is not by the bedside table. My mum has taken my phone to call a friend of hers. Real intrusion of privacy here.

I think I can be a real introvert at home. I must firstly state that I LOVE having guests over. I have guests staying over all the time. I love hosting friends and family (*hint hint*) but I never actually had a permanent roommate my entire life. I have been pretty pampered and never had the need to share a room with someone else. So the idea of a person barging in and out of my room at their own will and using my computer at their liberty comes as a shock to my system. Which got me thinking actually. How am I ever going to get married, sleep on the same bed as someone else, share the same cupboard to store our clothes, share the same laptop and give the other person the green light to look through my stuff without the need for an invitation. How am I going to come to terms with the fact that there might be accidental usage of HIS towel (ew…chromosome Y’s towel!) Having a person stay over once in a while is one thing. To live with another person and share the same bed PERMANENTLY is another. It’s like being completely vulnerable, transparent, open and accountable to another person. That’s marriage my dear friends, and the prospect of that scares me. Oh well, I still have a couple of years ahead of me…till then, these will just be nonsensical ramblings and fleeting thoughts =)

p/s: I just bought a web cam. It’s pretty cool. Except when my little cousin constantly wants to webcam with me…hm…a little self-conscious cause I must be all proper and adult =) I’m sitting with my back straight up and making sure I’m decently clothed now cause I’m on webcam with my cousin. You know, I got to set a good example =D

My cousin was just telling me on msn that she has to sew this blouse for the living skills subject. I conveniently forget to tell her that I merely sent my sewing project to the tailor and got my maid to do my woodwork. Ignorance is bliss =D I guess, its like how my older cousin conveniently omitted details of his wild partying days, his high life days back at uni, probably strutted down the streets with a girl in each arm, wearing a Hugo Boss shirt tucked into his Armani trousers and with the car keys to his secretly-purchased-car in his pocket. He only recently revealed his cheeky stories a couple of months ago which gave me a jaw ache from all the gasping. And now, he is happily married with a kid to boot =D

pps: my goodness, my 9 year old cousin just added me on msn!! Its 11 pm back in Singapore. Shouldn’t the kids be sleeping by now? Gee…

R.I.P

Photobucket

I ripped my ONLY pair of skinny jeans the other day. Don't know how I did it, but yup, my usual clumsy-self did the impossible.

Anyone knows where I can buy a good pair of skinny jeans? I usually get mine from GASP or Bettina but I would like to shop outside my comfort zone.

Best thing since sliced bread

Came back home an hour ago and started rummaging the fridge. I was craving for something but i didnt quite know what. Don't you hate it when that happens?
*all girls nod heads in unison*

Started chomping on cheesels (its spelled correctly right?). Popped about 10 mini cheesels into my mouth. Stopped when the packet shook out mere crumps. But nope, not satisfied.

Hm...smoked salmon? Took one slice. Okay, not satisfied. Second slice...nope...Maybe I need more. Finished the entire packet. Okay, this is not it.

Maybe its fruits. Popped a couple of strawberries in my mouth. That's not it.

Getting frustrated.

Stared at the scotch fillet. Should I cook it. WIll that satisfy my cravings? Check the time. 11 pm. Hm...

Looked in the cupboard....Ah, the answer sits in there.

I'm a happy camper now. Currently sipping on my coffee. Perhaps, I think...I'm slightly addicted to this stuff. I dont NEED the cup but I'm always WANTING one. Words of an addict?

Yum yum..how can anyone not like this stuff!

Oops...just got a scolding from dad.
Dad: Did Shen (little bro) eat all the cheesels
Me: Em...no...It was me
Dad: You?!?!? Why did you eat the entire packet?
*Quickly strutted away*

post-edit: I'm an energetic hyper bunny now~! *wails* it's gonna be a long night.

Here it goes...

And I'm not suppose to be doing this. Blogging that is.

But I haven't written in this space for an awfully long time. I would like to say real life happened but really, not much has been happening on my end. Well, either nothing too interesting or nothing that I can write publicly about.

So, here's what I've been up to in random order:

Photobucket

Hm...let's see, I cleaned a crab the other day. My first crab~! I was really scared at first because it was still alive - moving and kicking. And, i felt bad being the one that ended its life =( But dad showed me how and I was stabbing it in glee. I'm a sadist sometimes =)

Photobucket

I decided to cook the crab sweet and sour style. Oops, I think I've gone a little too far with the coriander (I love coriander). It's really easy to cook this dish.

Here's the recipe in steps:

Oil the wok

Put in 8 diced garlic pips, 4 shallots and 2 big chillis.

Fry till fragrant

Add tomato sauce (hm...to your liking. Im bad at proportions)
Thai sweet chilli sauce (if you like it spicy)
Water (the amount of water depends on how much sauce you like. If you add more water, then you add more tomato sauce and other ingredients)
Vinegar (not too much, the dish should be more sweet than sour)
Sugar
Salt
Cornstarch (to thicken the sauce. Remember to mix the cornstarch first with a little water before pouring it in. ALso pour it from a great heigh to achieve a smooth texture)

Put in the crabs
Cover it and let it cook for about 15 minutes (or till it turns red)
Just before you dish it out, add a beaten egg (quickly stir the egg the moment you pour it in before it becomes one hard lump)

Dish the crabs out and add the coriander (don't over do it like me =) )

Here's some photos from my trip back to KL. I hardly took any photos this time round because my camera is always out of battery (i have this knack for not charging my things) or I leave my camera at home.

One main reason I'm never bored back in KL is because I have these two silly gooses to entertain me. Look at how we entertain ourselves when we line up to buy our cinema tickets. It was a long queue mind you, probably lined up for 45 minutes.

Photobucket
"Act surprised!"

Photobucket
"Gen has made the girls upset but he is oblivious to that fact"

Photobucket
"Think about our upcoming enticing seafood dinner"

Photobucket
"A hot girl walks pass" When a really hot girl walks pass, Wei Chee and I would normally just give each other THAT look. Its a common understanding. No words are needed to be exchanged. We read each other pretty well. Hm...while Gen drools??!?

Photobucket
"A hot guy walks pass" haha, check out Gen's bored look.
